Last year, Strouts Place Medical Centre (SPMC) went through some changes with
regards to appointment bookings, which was one of their key areas.
The manager said that whenever he looks at making any sort of changes, he thinks
of his elderly father, although he didn’t have any disabilities, to understand how he
would have dealt with certain situations and how the Practice could then remove
these barriers. Indeed, some of the issues his father faced are similar to the ones
disabled individuals would experience.

St-Paul’s Way identified they needed to improve signage, their understanding of the hearing loop and SignLive, make the lower desk space more user-friendly.
Their building is a new building to a degree, and it has accessible features.

The Practice Manager (PM) of XX Place and Bromley-by-Bow Health Centre (BBBHC) said most
people identified similar issues, which showed they were on the same line, such as:
• Easy Read resources
• BSL training and Video Relay System (SignLive)
• Reasonable adjustment flag
• Having an Assistance Dog Policy
• Installing TV screens in the waiting area to alert people, especially hard of hearing and
deaf people, when the doctor or nurse is ready to see them

The Disability Competency Training Programme consisted of two modules: Module 1 —
Reasonable Adjustments and Supporting Disabled People, and Module 2 — Accessible
Communication and Reasonable Adjustment. The Barkantine Practice attended these two
modules, in person and online. They also took part in two access audits, completed our
Practice Manager Questionnaire, and scheduled with us a video call to discuss their
recommendation reports.

The council recognises that promoting human rights, equality and diversity while tackling inequality, discrimination and harassment are central to the achievement of our vision. Therefore, it is important to ensure all customers are able to access our services and have a positive experience in our face-to-face settings, including handlers of assistance dogs.

This report seeks to further embed the THT Board’s duty of care towards residents who present the Community Voice to ensure empathy and avoid re-traumatisation, whilst at the same time addressing actions to effectively impact on the issues raised in the Community Voice.

We changed things up a bit this year and at 15:00 we were thrilled that Zainab Arian and Phillip Bennet Richards could join us to announce the THT ‘Integrated Care’ Award Winners and those recognised as Highly Commended - certificates were handed out across 6 categories. Fantastic that most attended to receive their certificates in person!
